Berlioz: Overture, Le Carnaval Romain. (The Roman Carnival.)

David Werden
Play as many notes as possible in Roman Carnival (but remember that your breath won't go as far when you are nervous). Leave out the occasional eighth note -- and then get back in smoothly.

Neal Corwell
Be sure to listen to orchestral version when preparing this excerpt. This will lead you to naturally play some passages more expressively than they are actually marked. In the first three bars (of "Q'), for example, there should be a crescendo, followed by a decrescendo in the following two bars. As you descend into the register (bars 13-17), be sure to maintain your volume level (until perhaps the end of bar 17). During these same 17 bars, you must be expressive, but VERY exact rhythmically because of what is going on under the theme in the rest of the ensemble.

During Letter "R", sneak breaths when necessary. Practice and plan your breaths instead of leaving them to chance. If necessary, leave out an eighth note somewhere so that you may begin the cres. molto (4 before "S") with a full tank of air. In addition to this notated increase of volume, also crescendo during all the bold descending passages such as the one found in bars 7-8 of letter "S".
