Schumann: When Jesus Wept
Neal Corwell
Although you want to be very expressive and romantic in your interpretation,
the rhythm must not be too free. This is particularly true during the
passages that are played as a duo with the trumpet. Familiarize yourself
thoroughly with the trumpet part so the two parts mesh together tightly.
Use many nuances of dynamics, vibrato, and articulation to be expressive.
Many times, particularly in concert situation with full ensemble, you
will need to far exceed the written dynamic markings. Be sure to maintain
pitch and tone quality on the final soft and low B-flat. also crescendo
during all the bold descending passages such as the one found in bars
7-8 of letter "S".
