Video of Leningrad Military Band - Autumn Dream

Rate this Entry
Here is a video of a historic concert by The United States Coast Guard Band in combination with the Leningrad Military District Band. The event was part of the USCG Band's tour of the Soviet Union in 1989, making the CG Band the first American military band to tour the USSR. One of the highlights was this concert in October Hall. In this piece, the Leningrad band performs a piece called "Autumn Dream" by themselves. You don't get much of a view of their euphonium section in this video, but you can hear them just fine! They used 2 tenor horns (baritone horns) and 1 euphonium, all in the "oval" design. It made for a very powerful and effective section.

A nice touch added by the director as a performance enhancement was to have the band sing the last section. Russians sing pretty well, and the all-male group sounds very nice here. It's a good lesson in thinking with imagination about how to perform a piece of music. The singing was not written in the parts, but it works very nicely.
